Apple :: Mac OS X
Recently, I've upgraded my Mac mini from the factory shipped OS X 10.3 "Panther" to Tiger, and ridiculous as it may sound, I consider Dashboard to be worth the ~$70 (academic) alone. At some point, I hope to make my own widgets, but for now, I'll enjoy the work of others. Allowing for the creation of small applications in HTML, CSS, and Javascript is a rather nice idea, and makes an already great desktop environment all the better. A built in VNC server also helps, though it's tricky getting client software to work with it (OSXvnc tends to be more compatible).
Dashboard, as alluded to above, falls somewhere between "GUI eye candy" and "must have information tool." While Macs are unquestionably aesthically pleasing systems, with well designed GUIs, I want more than just a toy - I want something that is very usable for me. (And that would be why I loathe OS 9.) Therefore, I am more interested in the practical nature of Dashboard - to present me with information and controls that would otherwise require extra effort. I'll write up some descriptions of the widgets I use, but for now, here's a list of the Dashboard widgets I use.
Please see the Mac OS X section of my Applications page.
