Debian GNU/Linux is my preferred Linux distribution of choice. apt-get, the key part of the packaging system of Debian, provides for a flawless installation of various software packages, handling all dependencies as they arise.
Klauss Knopper's Knoppix is an invaluable Linux live CD, with incomparable hardware support. Based on Debian GNU/Linux, it does not touch hard drives, and wears many hats, functioning as a rescue disk, forensics tool, or just as a comfortable work environment.
While it may still be at 0.1, Serial Terminal Linux is a very useful boot floppy. It truly lets me turn an old laptop of mine into a 'portable TTY.' Just set the options to /dev/ttyS0, 9600 baud, 8, N, 1 and you're good to go. Great stuff!
